Live with passion and joy! Anne Baird Designer/Owner SWAN LOVE: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! Anyone who has followed my work knows that I have a special love for swans. They’re so beautiful! They’re also among the oldest bird species in the world, found in fossil and bog specimens dating back thousands of years. As well, they’re among the largest flying birds in the world. A mature swan can be 5 feet long, with an impressive 10-foot wingspan! But those aren’t the reasons why I love them. I love them for their reputation of mating for life. For embodying lifelong fidelity and devotion. I have witnessed this love first hand. A pair of swans living in Ambleside Pond near our apartment was separated by death. The cob was attacked by a loose dog, and died of his wounds. His mate was inconsolable. For months, she plied the waters of the pond, uttering strangled cries of grief that broke my heart. Finally, the park attendants found her a new, younger mate. It took a while for her to accept him. She continued to search for her former partner until she became convinced that he was never returning. Only then did she form a new bond, which now seems as indestructible as the one she had before. In an age of hook-ups, and fear of commitment, the swans hold out an ideal that many still cherish. This Valentine image shows a Swan Carousel, circling life’s merry-go-round and sheltering two lovers between his mighty wings. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY to lovers of all ages! Swan love still exists.
